Energy Access

Ideas to Impact is an action-research programme that is testing innovation prizes through the design and launch of five innovation prizes, intended to stimulate and incentivise scalable solutions for longstanding challenges in three thematic areas: water and sanitation, energy access and climate change adaptation

The Cylinder Prize

From our first phase of research we decided that innovation prizes may be a useful tool to use alongside other types of intervention in specific contexts. This lead to us running our first Energy Access prize, focusing on increased access to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a cooking fuel in Ghana – The Cylinder Prize.

The Cylinder Prize ran in 2015 with more than 180 solvers from 40 countries proposing solutions. Among all those proposals, seven solvers received an award for five different ideas.

Ideas to Impact is an adaptive programme, constantly reviewing, learning and adapting our prize design to ensure the greatest impact. This led to us redesigning the Energy Access prize to implement a new prize focusing this time on Off-Grid Refrigeration.

You can read more about why we changed The Cylinder Prize in our blog ‘The Cylinder Prize – what happened next?’

Global LEAP Off-Grid Refrigeration

Global Leap

The Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (LEAP) is currently running their Off-Grid Refrigeration Competition. Global LEAP has partnered with Ideas to Impact (DFID), USAID's U.S. Global Development Lab and Power Africa to issue a joint call for off-grid refrigeration solutions.
Our implementing partner, Energy 4 Impact has been involved in the ongoing implementation of the prize.

As part of the first call for innovations under Scaling Off-Grid Energy: A Grand Challenge for Development, the Off-Grid Refrigeration Competition will reward advancements in off-grid refrigeration technology, as well as the most promising commercial models.
